A Decorated Christmas

I had a bit of a late start on decorating for this Christmas, mostly due the late Thanksgiving holiday this year.  After which I've also been slow getting at taking the photos, and sharing them.  Christmas Eve, Eve is a perfect time to do so!  I always enjoy opening up the Christmas decorations that have been stored away, and seeing all the beautiful things that have been out of site for a year.  The memories of many of the items always makes me smile, and there are things I have even forgotten about until I view them once again after such a long time.

I love Christmas and truly enjoy this time of year.  We will be waiting to share our Christmas all together with our family on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.  Come on in and I'll share with you some of the sights of Christmas at our place.

My chalkboard is a fun addition to my kitchen area.  I like adding a festive greeting or something fun as the seasons change and during holidays, and even some birthdays too!  For Christmas, a "Merry Christmas" greeting was just the right thing, along with my attempt at a poinsettia with bow and ribbon, also some holly berry and leaves.

Dressing the dining table is always fun.  A bright afternoon lightens the room with a sunny glow.

By evening the lights from the chandelier add sparkle to the room.  I love the elegance of the golden touches and the gold leaf charger plates, they are just perfect for the holidays!  I feel that layers often make it more interesting when setting the table, and I used a few for this look.  The acrylic napkin holders have an area that's a little bud vase, so I placed some holiday greenery and a golden pine cone in them, they're so cute!  I tucked in a candy cane at each place setting too, mmm chocolate mint candy canes!  My Mother gave me the pretty gravy bowl along with a few other matching pieces, and the bread basket is from a set of three my Sister sent me years ago.  These are a couple of my favorite items and each one reminds me of them, and they're perfectly me, it's just my style!

This area serves as a buffet and display area.  I put this 'Buffet Table' together years ago by using two large pillars and a piece of glass with beveled edges.  More golden touches over here too.  Some of my crystal pieces are on display here.  Above on the mirror is a winter wreath I made some years ago.  It may surprise you what it is made of, and you can see how I made it here.

This little table comes in handy for many things, sometimes it's even a hiding place for extra items.  shhh...don't peek under the table cloth!  Some candy canes are on the ready for passers-by.  A "Merry Christmas" greeting on the pretty plate, and a glass jar filled with pine cones that have touches of gold from a spray of gold paint, all add a little something to this corner.

The mantel is a great display area to change for the holidays.  I found some of these items last year and they quickly became new favorites.  The gold trees were 'must haves' when I saw them!

Our beautiful Christmas Tree!
I did a bit more of a simplistic decorating approach this year, it's elegant yet simple!  Less is more, and more with less!  I added a few items to dress the stairs.  I love this slender tree.  I've had bigger trees before, but I like that this slender tree doesn't take up so much room.  I do love to load up the tree with ornaments though, more, more, more!

Aeon likes this spot to admire this new addition to our home, this is his first Christmas with us and seeing a Christmas tree.  He may be another good reason that I kept the decor simple this year, even though he is big, he is still a bit of a puppy.
He might be thinking that all of the ball ornaments are just for him.  I'll be watching him closely!

Whip up a sweet Christmas gift!

Here's a sweet little Christmas gift you can whip up quickly, and it's so easy to make!  I think it's pretty cute too!  I made these to give as gifts a couple of years ago, and since they were a hit then I wanted to make them again this year for a few friends.  I enjoyed the smiles and giggles I received after giving these sweet little surprises filled with kisses!

... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...

Some Hershey's Kisses and a Whisk become a sweet little gift that is perfect for just about anyone!  You really can whip these up very quickly, and they don't cost much to make!  I used a mixture of different Hershey's kisses to make these, but you could also make them with just one type, or just use someone's favorite.

... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...

After filling the whisk with kisses (it's easy to slip the Kisses in between the openings on the whisk), I used storage bags, the gallon-sized twist-tie type, to wrap up the Kisses filled whisk.  I created some fun gift tags on my computer with the words "We 'Whisk' you a Merry 'Kiss'mas!", then after printing them, attached a tag with foil ribbons of red, green, silver and gold to the wrapped whisk to finish them off.

DIY Drop Cloth Curtains - for Our Covered Porch

I was looking into roll down shades to use on our new covered porch when I came across the idea of using drop cloths for curtains.  Yes, canvas drop cloths, you know like painter's cloths that painters use!  The roll down shades were advertised as "great for shade and keeping the heat of the sun out."  I figured they would also do the opposite for keeping the heat in, although they were not inexpensive to say the least, as we would have to special order them to fit.

Also after pricing outdoor curtains, I know those are not inexpensive either.  The drop cloths seemed like a great idea to me, but, selling that idea to the Hubster was gonna take a great deal of effort, I thought to myself.  Amazed I was and full of disbelief that he actually said he liked the idea, and he was even asking questions as in "how-to?"  How-to hang them, how-to this, how-to that, and where do we get them?

Well, I was full of questions myself with few answers, but I figured if we both put our combined thoughts together with a plan, I knew we could do it!  The idea I had seen used conduit for the rods and screw in hooks to hold them up, and curtain clips were used to hang the drop clothes.

It took a couple trips to the local home improvement stores to get drop cloths, curtain clips, and also originally the thought was to use actual curtain rods(his preference), which by the way I knew would cost much more than what I had planned via the idea I had seen using inexpensive conduit for the rods.  Turned out the actual curtain rods didn't seem to work well enough after all.  Another trip to return the curtain rods and purchase conduit lessened the overall expense greatly.

A ten foot section of electrical conduit costs only about 3 or 4 dollars compared to the $12.99 for the curtain rods that we'd purchased!  The drop cloths cost about 14 dollars a piece for a 6 x 9, 10 oz. cloth, and they require no sewing since they have nice finished edges all the way around! (Awesomeness!)  We had section openings that were just at six foot across and the drop length needed was about nine feet.  Perfect!  We calculated needing at least six cloths to cover the areas, but ended up getting one more to help close off the gate/entry area too.  This gave us more of a completely enclosed curtain coverage for all of the open areas.

_________ . _________

I love the look and think it also adds a real touch of southern charm.  We simply hung them up with the curtain clips and pulled them back.  Hubster cut the conduit in short sections and had the genius idea of adding the black rubber chair tips to the ends, and he also painted over the gold screw in hooks with black paint.  He was going to paint the conduit also, but we liked the contrast with leaving them unpainted.

The curtains add a nice look to our new outdoor room!  And, they're functional!

_________ . _________

On a bright sunny day the curtains drawn help cut down on the sun glare.  Also, if it's cooler they help to add warmth to the space, especially when we light a fire.  They also add privacy too!

_________ . _________

And of an evening they add a cozy blanket of warmth and privacy as well!

_________ . _________

A closer view of the rods and hardware.  So simple, easy, and best of all they're much less expensive compared to the cost of actual outdoor curtains!  After all it is outdoors so I figure it's easy to replace them if they don't weather well, but I expect they will do a fine job, and I really do love the look!

Tortellini Soup

Soup's on!

As the cooler weather is upon us, it's a great time for thinking about cooking up some soups.  Soup to me is one of those true comfort foods.  It warms you from the inside like a big warm hug.  I enjoy all of the traditional soups, stews and also chili-(I love my chili, the recipe can be found here), but I was wanting something a little different.  Something out of the ordinary.  I made my tortellini soup with three cheese tortellini, and I really enjoyed it, and it got the approval of the Hubster too!(he's really not a soup dude!)  This soup is definitely something different and it's quick, easy, and oh so satisfying.  Perfect for serving up with a big hunk of fresh bread, or some toasty garlic bread.  Yum!  It even looks festive and fits in nicely at the holidays with the beautiful colors.

Tortellini Soup

Ingredients:

9 oz. cheese tortellini (fresh or frozen, any variety)
2  14 oz. cans chicken broth or vegetable broth (low sodium) approx-4 cups
2 cups fresh spinach leaves or kale leaves-ribs cut off
1 14 oz. can white beans, cannellini/white kidney beans, drained
1 15 oz. can diced tomatoes (plus the juice)
1/2 cup diced onion, or 1 tsp onion powder
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 cup olive oil
1 tbsp italian seasoning or 1/2 tbsp basil, and 1/2 tbsp oregano
salt and pepper
red pepper flakes (optional)
1/2 cup fresh grated parmesan cheese

Directions:

Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.  Add onions and cook/stir for a few minutes until softened slightly and transparent, not browned.  Add the garlic and stir for about another minute, next add the italian seasoning, broth, tomatoes and beans to the pot.  Stir gently to combine.  Bring mixture to a boil.  Add the tortellini and cook according to the package directions, then add the spinach or kale at the last minute of cooking.  Gently stir in about 1/4 cup of the parmesan cheese at the end.  Remove from heat.  Serve with fresh grated parmesan garnish, also salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes can be added to individual servings to their taste.

A nice hearty soup, with loads of cheese tortellini, along with cannellini beans, spinach and tomato goodness!

A nice finish with the addition of fresh grated parmesan cheese stirred in at the end too!

Serve it up with a garnish of fresh grated parmesan cheese, and I like to add red pepper flakes to mine for an added punch of heat!

I think the next time I make this, I'm going to make it using mushroom tortellini and maybe even throw in a few fresh sliced mushrooms too!

Soup is on!...

Outdoor Project: Finish & Furnish Update

After much awaited time for completion and obtaining final inspections on our new covered deck and patio area, we're able to say it's officially finished and ready for furniture and dressing up. Just a couple days before and just in time for our guests for the Thanksgiving holiday.  Using much of which we already had in the way of furnishings, we spruced up the cushions with a good cleaning and also gave a new look to a few other items with fresh paint.

This layout gave us ample seating and a cozy place to share with our guests.  We love the new space and find that we want to spend every minute out there, weather permitting of course, which has been in our favor.  It's been nice having some warm temperatures to enjoy for late November and early December.  Although the warmth of the fireplace and a heater help with enjoying it even when it is cold outside!

Our outdoor space is even more than we had dreamed of and it's a relaxing place to spend a morning having a cup of coffee, an enjoyable place to watch some football, or to spend an evening by the fire having a nice glass of wine.

Welcome to the Back Porch!

  A panoramic view

..................

The fireplace is a grand focal point and turned out beautifully.  It's nice having a TV outside,  we can quickly remove it if need be, and we have a protective cover for it too.  We added some curtains for privacy and to keep out the rain or wind, it helps with making it feel warmer too when they are closed.  This should have the opposite effect when it's hot outside too, and along with the fans should keep the area cooler.  I love the look and I think they add an extra bit of southern-charm to the space.  I love the lanterns too, they also add to the look and add a nice glow at night with the candles lit.  In the summer I'm thinking some citronella in there will deter pests!

A nice conversation area!

Sometimes, old is new again with a little paint!  This table and chair set has been around a while, and thanks to some fresh paint it looks new again all dressed in black!

..................

I love, love this new patio area, and it has some 'old is new again' items that have been painted.  I am surprised that I thought I wasn't going to like this as much as I do love it now!

* Happy December *

Here it is December already!  I'm going to be busy planning for the Christmas holiday, as I am sure that's what most of everyone else is doing right now.  Since Thanksgiving was only a couple of days from December this year, it felt like it arrived even sooner than usual.  I have most often started my decorating for Christmas the first week of December in the past, but I'm going to be a little behind this year because of the later Thanksgiving celebration.

I've not been one to get to the Christmas decorating before Thanksgiving.  But when I do get started, I always enjoy opening up the decorations that have been ever so carefully stored away for the past year.  It's kind of like early Christmas presents when I see all of the ornaments for the Christmas tree, and all the rest of the pretty, shiny, glittered and sparkling things that bring back so many memories when I see them again.  I love Christmas time and look forward to the holiday with all of its magic and wonder.

Happy December Everyone!

Giving Thanks

The Thanksgiving holiday was a time to gather with Family and Friends enjoying the time together along with great food.  It's good to be thankful everyday, but in the midst of our busy lives having one day to slow down and enjoy together as we count the many blessings in our life, is one to be truly grateful and thankful for.  I enjoyed having the house full and the joy of us all spending time together, sharing stories and laughter, and eating.  Lots and lots of eating!

Our guests were Hubby's parents, his brother and his wife, both of our daughters, our son-in-law, and our granddaughters, and a family friend.  With ten adults, two sweet and energetic little girls and three active and lively pups all together here, we managed a good-timing time!  We had much of the traditional goodies for our Thanksgiving dinner with of course, thee always the star: the turkey.  It was accompanied by a very tasty smoked-ham, prepared and brought by my Father and Mother-in-law.  Along with sides of stuffing or dressing (we call it that since we don't stuff the turkey with it); candied sweet potatoes, topped with marshmallows; green bean casserole; mashed potatoes and turkey gravy; macaroni salad (my-cheesy macaroni pasta shell salad); deviled eggs; whole cranberry sauce and jellied cranberry sauce; and fresh baked french loaf bread.  Also for desserts, chocolate cream pie, pecan pie, and a chocolate fudge bundt cake.

Everything was placed out on one table for buffet style serve yourself plate filling.  That's the way to do it!  It was a delicious dinner and I feel sure that everyone was happily full and satisfied by the end of it.  I'm glad that others did capture some photos of the day,  I was too busy most of the time to think about taking photos (can you believe that?). That was far from my mind while preparing and serving up the grand spread of a meal that was, I feel, overall a success!  Even if I did forget to add the celery and onion to my stuffing/dressing, or if the mashed potatoes could have stuck to a wall because they were so thick (a quick fix by the sis-in-law made them all better).  But hey, if that was the worst of it then in my book I shall go on and toot my own horn (beep, beep) 'cause I didn't let it bother me really, it was simply laughable!

I am very happy and thankful to have gotten to be hostess to a fun and great group of people that I love.  Also for having them all here in our home and that I was able to prepare some delicious food for them, and to enjoy it along with them.  That's Thanksgiving to me!

How do you seat ten at a table for six?
The addition of a  4 x 8 sheet of plywood, equals instant larger table, along with chairs from another room.  Thanks to the Hubster for this idea, and friends giving us the idea years ago!
Although I was a bit skeptical, it worked out perfectly!
