Wedding Card Box - D I Y Tutorial

I've seen many different types of items used for collecting wedding cards, from baskets, birdcages, boxes, a vintage suitcase and more, to just about anything that can hold cards really.  Many of the guests bring a gift and/or a wedding card with well-wishes and a monetary gift to the wedding, so it's good to plan a place for them.

I created a Wedding Card Box for my daughter and son-in-law's recent wedding to use for the wedding cards they received from family and friends attending their wedding and reception.  I of course ran the idea by the future Bride and Groom first, hoping for a nod of approval and once they happily accepted, I let my creativity and ideas, along with their thoughts on my ideas, help me in putting together something we all approved of and were pleased with.

Going with the planned color scheme of the wedding, I decorated two different sized, plain boxes and attached them together.  It actually turned out better than I had imagined, and it looked nice on display at the reception.  It served its purpose well and fit in nicely with the decor, matching the wedding colors perfectly.  So happy that my daughter said she "loved it, and that it was super cute!"

-DIY tutorial below-

Supplies used:
two plain, white boxes with lids
three different sizes, and colors of ribbon
embellishments-ribbon & pearl flowers, tulle & pearl picks
metallic-look letters
hot glue gun
glue sticks
Scotch clear glue
ruler
utility knife

I marked off a square about an inch in from the edge of the bottom of the smaller box.  Using a utility knife I cut out a square from the bottom of the smaller box, and then also cut out the same size square from the lid of the larger box.

After the bottom was cut away from the smaller box, I used the cut-out square piece as a template to trace around as a guide for the same size square to be cut from the lid of the larger box.  Then the square cut was made into the lid of the larger box.  Later the two boxes would be glued together, forming a tall hollow area inside.

I used three different sizes and colors of ribbon.   Layering the ribbons, centered from widest to narrowest.  I placed the first wide ribbon around the box while the box was upside down with the lid on, so I could place the ribbon very close to and next to the lid.

After measuring the ribbon lengths needed to go around the box plus an extra inch, the ribbons were cut to length.  Using small amounts of hot glue to secure each layer, the ribbons were then folded under neatly in the back to create a clean edge, then secured with hot glue.

After the ribbons were added and secured in place.

Using the utility knife, I cut a long rectangular shape from the lid of the smaller box.  I then measured and cut a piece of the widest ribbon leaving an extra inch on both ends to be wrapped neatly under the lid and secured with hot glue.  Before gluing the ribbon in place I cut a slice down the middle of it just short of the opening size, then cut at angles toward the corners on the end.

With the lid turned over, the cut portions of the ribbon edges were secured in place with hot glue around the opening.

And, the angled end cuts were also glued.  This created a nice clean cover of the cut-out opening in the box where the cards would be dropped through.

The smaller box was hot glued to the lid of the larger box, securing the two together and forming one tall, hollow area on the inside where the cards could be dropped down into the bottom.  I finished it off by adding the embellishments and a bow made from one of the three ribbons.

And, then added the metallic-look letters using Scotch clear glue to secure by gluing each one in place , and spelling the word "C A R D S."

I'm happy with how it turned out.  And, even happier that they both liked it, too!...

I'd also like to share the nice Chalkboard display that my oldest daughter hand lettered.  She was asked, per the Bride's request, to create the sign/display, via-[example] to be used at the wedding ceremony.  She is also crafty in her own way, and often says "she does better with executing a plan, rather than coming up with one on her own."  Her writing and caligraphy-style lettering talent really shines through with this chalkboard display.   She found the chalkboard at Hobby Lobby and used white chalk-paint pens.  Well done!  And, isn't it just so cute, and what a nice statement?!

Happy crafting!...
